As a teenager working at the famous Folies-Bergère in Paris, Christian Louboutin was amazed by how the showgirls could walk easily in large headdresses. It was during the early 1980s that he developed his interest in shoe design. After working at the Folies-Bergère, Louboutin gained more experience by working with the well-known shoe brand Charles Jourdan, learned from the expert Roger Vivier, and designed for fashion houses like Chanel, Maud Frizon, and Yves Saint Laurent.
In 2023, Christian Louboutin celebrated the 30th anniversary of his famous iconic red soles. The idea came when he wasn’t happy with the black sole of a prototype shoe inspired by Andy Warhol’s "Flowers." He borrowed a bottle of red nail polish from an assistant who was painting her nails, and the famous red soles were born.

Choo opened his first shop in Hackney in 1986, which was located in an old hospital building. It didn’t take too much time for his brand to become famous. Just two years after opening, his shoes were published in an eight-page spread in Vogue magazine.
Jimmy Choo quickly became a favorite choice among celebrities, especially Princess Diana, who often wore his shoes wherever she went. However, there is also a role of Vogue that truly helped elevate the Jimmy Choo brand. Despite his growing fame, Choo was still running a small business in which he was making just 20 handmade pairs of shoes each week. Tamara Yeardye Mellon, an accessories editor at Vogue, who often hired Choo for fashion shoots, estimated the potential for a larger market for his designs. Two years later, she opened a boutique in Deauville, France, where she started her career selling simple sportswear, like jersey sweaters. By 1915, she used jersey fabric to create a “poor girl” look that caught the attention of wealthy women who were looking for relief from the uncomfortable, corseted fashion of the time. In 1926, Chanel introduced the famous "little black dress" (LBD).

Miuccia is the second of three siblings. She was born into a wealthy family. Her father, Luigi (“Gino”) Bianchi, ran a company that made putting-green mowers. Her mother, Luisa, inherited the luxury company Fratelli Prada ("Prada Brothers") and became its leader in 1958. Miuccia was initially interested in politics and earned a Ph.D. in political science from the University of Milan in 1973. During her studies, her mind changed toward feminism and liberal politics. She joined the Italian Communist Party, which often handed out flyers at protests. Miuccia also spent about five years studying to become a mime at the Teatro Piccolo ("Little Theatre") in Milan.
Bianchi joined the Prada family business in 1970 and supervised one of its two remaining stores. In 1978, she became the head of the company, which only had one store at the time, and hired her main supplier. Blahnik’s mother loved designer shoes, and during World War II, when materials were hard to find, a local shoemaker taught her how to make her own using items like wood, leather, ribbon, and lace. Inspired by her mother's creativity, Blahnik developed an interest in shoe design from a young age, and he started making tiny shoes for his pets using muslin and cotton ribbons.
In 1968, Blahnik came to London, where he started working at the Zapata fashion boutique. In 1970, Blahnik met Diana Vreeland, who was then the editor-in-chief of American Vogue. When it came time for Salvatore’s sister Giuseppina to need white shoes for her First Communion, the family did not have the money to buy them. Salvatore bought nails, thread, white canvas, and all the tools from the shoemaker that he needed to make the shoe in Bonito. That night, he secretly made his first pair of shoes. IN the morning, they were ready, and his sister went to church with white shoes on her feet, to the astonishment of all. He was only nine years old, and everyone was amazed. That moment confirmed his dream and made him realize that he would become a shoemaker.
At 16, Salvatore left for America to join his siblings. He got a job at the Plant Shoe Factory in Boston. While he was impressed by the machines and how fast they worked, he noticed that the quality of machine-made shoes couldn’t match the handcraft he had learned in Italy.
In 1915, he moved to Santa Barbara, California, where he opened a shoe repair shop. He loved the landscape that reminded him of Italy, and soon he started making shoes for movie stars as Hollywood began to grow. The top actresses of the time became his customers.

16. Christian Dior

Christian Dior was born on January 21, 1905, in Granville, a seaside town in northern France. He was the second of five children. His father owned a successful fertilizer business. When Dior was young, his family moved to Paris, where he grew up. Although he loved art and wanted to be an architect but his father wanted him to have a more traditional career. So, in 1925, Dior started studying political science at the École des Sciences Politiques with the plan to become a diplomat.
After graduating in 1928, Dior used money from his father to open a small art gallery. His father agreed to support him financially on the condition that Dior didn’t put the family name on the gallery sign.
Dior’s gallery showed art by famous people like Picasso and Cocteau. But in 1931, he had to close it. That year was hard for Dior because he lost her mother and his older brother, and his father’s business lost all its money due to bankruptcy.
After closing his gallery, Dior started earning money by selling his fashion sketches. In 1935, he got a job drawing for the magazine Figaro Illustré. A few years later, he became a design assistant for fashion designer Robert Piguet. But when World War II started, Dior joined the French army and served in the south of France.
When France surrendered to Germany in 1940, Dior returned to Paris. He got a job with designer Lucien Lelong, whose fashion house made clothes for both the Nazis and French women working with them. At the same time, Dior’s younger sister, Catherine, joined the French Resistance. She was captured and sent to a concentration camp, but she survived and was freed in 1945.
With the help of French businessman Marcel Boussac, Christian Dior opened his own fashion house in 1946. In 1947, he introduced his famous “New Look,” which surprised many people because it was so different from wartime fashion. The New Look had small shoulders, a tight waist, and a full, long skirt—very different from the short skirts and broad shoulders women wore during the war.
